Apparently, the flight crew really does mean it when they advise passengers to keep their seat belts on when the indicator light is on.
Sudden severe turbulence struck a United Airlines flight with 239 passengers and 11 crew members en route to Honolulu from Newark, NJ, injuring six flight attendants and a teenage passengers, who were taken to the hospital after landing. The airline promises a full review.
Bad weather and winds up to 60 mph around the Hawaiian Islands also caused at least six other flights inbound to Maui to divert to Honolulu, but no injuries were reported on those flights. In fact, passengers reported mostly smooth flying despite the windy and rainy weather. No doubt this raises questions as to why the United flight was the only one to suffer the turbulence. Is it just bad luck or yet another example of United’s continued poor performance?
Although turbulence very rarely brings down a plane, it resulted in three fatalities between 1980 and 2009 — one flight attendant and two were passengers who were not wearing their seat belts.
